The Columbus Jazz Society Scholarship Fund is designed to support up-and-coming jazz talent in Columbus and the surrounding area by providing scholarships to deserving students in the Jazz Studies program at Columbus State University and recognizing student achievements in the area high school jazz programs.
College Level Scholarship Recipients
Jeremy Pownall (alto sax) and Brandyn Taylor (tenor sax).
Both contributed enormously to the quality of jazz performances in the CSU Jazz Ensembles' concerts and improved their improvisational skills.
High School Jazz Awards
The purpose of these awards are to encourage young area musicians to pursue expertise in jazz performance and to publicly recognize these students. Pictured below: Dr. Alex Persounin, Director of Jazz Studies at Columbus State University presents the CJS High School Jazz Awards.
… Senior during the 2010-2011 school year at Central High School. Was selected as the Page One Award nominee for Central High School. Played all percussion, piano/keyboard, and guitar in ALL areas of the Band program. Andrew was selected as the premier Red Band (top group) All-State percussion player from our district. Planned to attend Auburn University and be involved with the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band during the Fall of 2011.
… Sophomore during the 2010-2011 school year at Central High School. He has been involved in all aspects of the Band Program with a huge emphasis on his Jazz Studies. He plans to continue playing in all areas and expand his woodwind knowlege into other instruments.
… Senior during the 2010-2011 school year at Central High School. He was one of our Outstanding Band Students at Central. He made the Alabama All-State Band on Upright Bass for three years. Planned to attend College and major in music with emphasis in Jazz Studies.
